Spreader settings control how much material (seed, fertilizer, ice melt, etc.) is released from the hopper as you push or walk with the spreader. Adjusting the setting changes the size of the opening at the bottom of the hopper; the larger the opening, the more product flows out.
All ECHO® spreaders have a gate adjuster. The number corresponds to the opening size:
- Lower numbers = smaller opening = less material spread
- High numbers = larger opening = more material spread

Choosing the right setting:
- Check the product label: Most fertilizer, grass seed, and ice melt bags include spreader setting charts. Customers should use the setting comparison chart if one of the following brands—Scotts, Vigoro, or Earthway—is listed on the material they wish to spread. For example, if a bag of fertilizer recommends using a Scotts setting of 4.75, refer to the chart to see that this equals an ECHO® setting of 4.5.
If there are no brands on the bag of material being spread or the packaging refers to a brand that is not listed in the above chart, a customer can refer to the setting by granular size chart. These are ECHO®'s recommended settings depending on the size and material that is being spread. For example if a customer would like to spread pesticide and the package of the material does not refer any brand, ECHO® recommends the user set the spreader at setting 2-2.5.
- Test and adjust: Chose a paved area (like a driveway) for a short test. Spread a small amount and see how much product is being released. If too heavy, lower the setting. If too light, raise the setting
- Maintain a steady walking pace: Typically about 3 mph (a brisk walk). Walking too slowly releases more material per area; walking too fast spreads less.
