How should ECHO® brushcutter blades be sharpened?

Depending on the blade type, it can either be sharpened by the user or should be taken to an authorized ECHO® dealer for professional sharpening.

3-Tooth Grass and Weed Blade: This blade may be sharpened as part of regular maintenance

  • File the teeth: File each tooth at a 30° angle, using a consistent number of strokes (for example, four per tooth), and continue around the blade until all teeth are sharp.

  • Protect the tooth radius: Do not file the “gullet” (the curved radius) with a flat file, as it must remain rounded to prevent cracks and blade failure. If using an electric grinder, take care to avoid overheating, never let the tips glow red or turn blue, and do not cool the blade in water, as this can alter the temper and weaken it.

  • Maintain the tooth radius: After sharpening, inspect each tooth radius and use a round (rat-tail) file to restore the proper curved shape if any corners have become sharp.
