How to find the tine, chain, or blade speed for ECHO® products?

Tiller/Cultivator: To calculate tine speed, you’ll need two values: the maximum wide-open throttle speed (RPM) and the gear case reduction ratio.

  • Take the maximum wide-open throttle speed (RPM)
  • Divide it by the gear case reduction ratio
  • The result will be the tine rotations per minute
    • Example of the tine speed on the TC-210: 12,000 RPM/Gear case ratio 42.0 = 12,000/42.0 = 285 rotations per minute.

Chainsaws/Power Pruners: To calculate chain speed, you'll need three values: the chain pitch, teeth on the sprocket, and the wide-open throttle speed (RPM).

  • Take the chain pitch and multiply by two.
  • Multiply the result by the number of teeth on the sprocket
  • Multiply the result by the maximum wide-open throttle speed (RPM)
  • The result is the chain speed in inches per minute
    • Example of the chain speed on the CS-590: 0.375 x 2 = 0.75. 0.75 x 7 = 5.25. 5.25 x 13,000 = 68,250 inches per minute.

Edgers: To calculate blade speed, you’ll need two values: the maximum wide-open throttle speed (RPM) and the gear case reduction ratio.

  • Take the maximum wide-open throttle speed (RPM)
  • Divide it by the gear case reduction ratio
  • The result will be the blade rotations per minute
    • Example of the blade speed on the PE-2620: 11,500 RPM/Gear case ratio 2.07 = 11,500/2.07 = 5,555 rotations per minute.
