What is the ignition coil air gap for ECHO® products?

Modified on Thu, Oct 2, 2025 at 1:04 PM

The ignition coil air gap is the small space between the ignition coil and the engine’s flywheel or magneto. This gap allows the magnetic field from the flywheel magnets to pass through the coil, generating the high-voltage spark needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture. A proper air gap ensures a strong, consistent spark for reliable starting and smooth engine operation. If the gap is too small, the coil may rub against the flywheel, causing damage or erratic sparks. If it’s too large, the coil may not generate enough voltage, leading to weak or no spark and poor engine performance.

Gas-Powered Engines: The ignition coil air gap for all gas-powered ECHO® engines is 0.012"-0.016" or 0.3mm-0.4mm.

Battery-Powered Engines: Battery-powered ECHO® engines do not use spark based combustion, so there is no ignition coil air gap to set.
