Clearing a Flooded Engine

Most Gas-Powered Handheld Products

(Bed Redefiner, Brushcutter, Concrete Saw, Drill/Auger, Edger, Hedge Trimmer, Power Pruner®, Pro Attachment Series™, Tiller, and Trimmer)

Verify that the ON/OFF switch (A) is in the ON position. 

Move the choke lever (B) to the RUN position (choke open/down).

Press the purge bulb (C) until it fills with fuel and fuel returns to the fuel tank through the clear return line. 

With the unit on the ground, fully squeeze and hold the throttle trigger, then pull the starter rope (D) several times in succession. A flooded engine typically requires 8-10 pulls before it starts. If the engine does not start, repeat the procedure.

Important: The cutting attachment may begin rotating as soon as the engine starts. To reduce the risk of injury, keep all moving parts off the ground and away from people, objects, and anything that could become entangled or be thrown.  

Chainsaws

Engage the chain brake before attempting to start the chainsaw.

Verify the ON/OFF switch (A) is in the ON position.

Move the choke to the RUN position (choke open).

If equipped, press the decompression valve (B). If equipped with a purge bulb (B), press it until it fills with fuel.

With the unit on the ground, fully squeeze and hold the throttle trigger, then pull the starter rope (D) several times in succession. A flooded engine typically requires 8-10 pulls before it starts. If the engine does not start, repeat the procedure. 

Important: Ensure the guide bar and chain are clear of obstructions before starting. Never increase engine speed while the chain brake is engaged, as this can damage the chain brake.

Blowers

Handheld Blowers

Verify the ON/OFF switch (A) is in the ON position. Set the throttle position lever (B) halfway between idle and full throttle.

Move the choke (C) to the RUN position. Press the purge bulb (D) until it fills with fuel. 

With the unit on the ground, fully squeeze and hold the throttle trigger, then pull the starter rope (F) several times in succession. A flooded engine typically requires 8-10 pulls before it starts. If the engine does not start, repeat the procedure. 

Backpack Blowers

Move the throttle lever (A) to the IDLE position.

Move the choke (B) to the RUN position. Press the purge bulb (C) until it fills with fuel and fuel returns to the fuel tank through the clear return line. With the unit on the ground, fully squeeze and hold the throttle trigger, then pull the starter rope (D) several times in succession. A flooded engine typically requires 8-10 pulls before it starts. If the engine does not start, repeat the procedure.
