Gear Case Becomes Hot During Operation

During normal operation, friction between the gears and bearings generates heat inside the gear case. This is a normal part of operation and helps distribute the grease throughout the gear housing to lubricate the gears and bearings. As a result, the gear case may become hot to the touch.


As the gears rotate inside the gear case, grease is distributed throughout the housing. The heat generated during operation softens the grease, allowing it to flow back toward the gears and bearings, where it continues to provide lubrication. 


Because operating temperatures vary depending on ambient temperature, workload, and operating conditions, there is no specific external gearcase temperature that indicates a problem. However, if excessive noise, smoke, a burning odor, grease leakage, or unusually high gear case temperatures are observed, discontinue operation and have the product inspected by an authorized ECHO® dealer.
