Trimmer Line Breaking or Melting

Trimmer line may break, wear quickly, or melt for several reasons. Common causes include:

  • Contact with hard surfaces: Striking concrete, fences, trees, rocks, or other hard objects can cause the trimmer line to break.
  • Line extends too far: If the trimmer line extends beyond the cutter blade on the debris shield, it is more likely to break. Always operate the trimmer with the debris shield installed.
  • Incorrect line size: Using a trimmer line diameter that is smaller or larger than recommended can result in excessive wear or poor performance. Always use the line diameter specified in your operator's manual.
  • Worn or damaged trimmer head: Burrs, rough edges, or damage inside the trimmer head can cut or fray the line. Replace the trimmer head if it is worn or damaged.
  • Heat buildup: Operating the trimmer at high speed for extended periods can generate heat inside the trimmer head, causing the line to soften or melt. Use the lowest effective engine speed for the cutting conditions to help reduce heat buildup.
  • Old or poor-quality trimmer line: Trimmer line that has become dry, brittle, or has been exposed to excessive heat or sunlight may break more easily. Store trimmer line in a cool, dry location. If the line has become dry, soaking it in water overnight may help restore its flexibility.

If your trimmer line continues to break or melt after following these recommendations, inspect the trimmer head for damage. If the problem persists, have the product inspected by an authorized ECHO® dealer. Use our Dealer Locator to find a dealer.
