Speed-Feed® 400 Trimmer Head Will Not Advance Line

The Speed-Feed® 400 trimmer head may not advance trimmer line, or the line may retract back into the trimmer head, for several reasons. Common causes include:

  • Spool Direction (most common): The spool may be installed upside down. The Speed-Feed® 400 trimmer head is designed for use with both clockwise and counterclockwise rotating units. On straight shaft and battery-powered trimmers, the "L" on the spool should face outward. On curved shaft trimmers, the "R" should face outward. Installing the spool in the incorrect orientation can prevent the trimmer line from advancing properly.
  • Advancing the Trimmer Line: To advance the trimmer line, operate the unit at full throttle while lightly tapping the bump knob on the ground. Attempting to advance the line at low engine speed may prevent the mechanism from operating properly.
  • Trimmer Line Length: If the trimmer line becomes too short, it may retract into the trimmer head, especially when engine speed is reduced. Ensure both ends of the trimmer line extend beyond the trimmer head before operating the product.
  • Melted Trimmer Line: The trimmer line may melt or fuse together due to excessive heat buildup inside the trimmer head. This commonly occurs when trimming against hard surfaces, such as concrete, brick, curbs, or chain-link fences, particularly when using the middle of the line instead of the tips. To help prevent the trimmer line from melting, trim using only the outer tips of the line and avoid prolonged contact with hard surfaces.

If the trimmer head still does not advance the trimmer line after completing the troubleshooting steps above, inspect the trimmer head for damage. If the problem persists, have the product inspected by an authorized ECHO® dealer. Use the Dealer Locator to find a dealer.
