How Should an ECHO® Brushcutter Blade Be Sharpened?

The recommended sharpening method depends on the type of brushcutter blade being used.

3-Tooth and 8-Tooth Grass and Weed Blades: The 3-tooth and 8-tooth grass and weed blades may be sharpened as part of routine maintenance.

  • File the Teeth: File each tooth at a 30° angle using a flat file. Apply the same number of file strokes to each tooth (for example, four strokes per tooth) to help maintain a balanced cutting edge.
  • Protect the Tooth Radius: Do not file the gullet (the curved radius at the base of each tooth) with a flat file. The radius must remain rounded to help prevent cracks and blade failure. If using an electric grinder, avoid overheating the blade. Do not allow the cutting edges to glow red or turn blue, and do not cool the blade in water, as this may affect the blade's hardness.
  • Maintain the Tooth Radius: After sharpening, inspect the radius at the base of each tooth. If necessary, use a round (rat-tail) file to restore the original curved shape.

22-Tooth and 80-Tooth Brush Blades: Sharpening instructions are not provided for the 22-tooth and 80-tooth brush blades. These blades should be sharpened by an authorized ECHO® dealer. Use the Dealer Locator to find a dealer.
